Once the United States encouraged the Panamanians (both financially and emotionally) to rise up and rebel against their Colombian owners in 1930, Colombian history took a turn for the worse. A rift caused a line in the sand to be drawn between the Liberals and the Conservatives. The conflict between insurgency groups such as FARC and ELN, and Colombia's government have dragged on and incorporated drug smuggling profits. The gorgeous country of Colombia,full of warm people and a rich culture, is the backdrop for one of the most violent and ruthless wars of our time. One which doesn't seem to have an end.
